Ugh... MS Word generates an awful excuse for HTML... that was my initial 
suspicion of the problem...

Well, when I request http://www.catholicrushden.org.uk/newsletter.htm I 
get an entirely empty response.

Was the "html" file created by Word empty before being uploaded?  Is the 
file on the server empty?  (Check the file size via FTP, perhaps.)

Have you reached the quota for your hosting account, and therefore can't 
  upload the file?

Do you have a transcript of an FTP session from attempting to upload? 
The example you sent was simply the FTP client fetching a list of files 
in /public_html, not attempting to upload
